Meet the artist

SYLVIA GRAY ALTMAN

I have been captivated by glass art from a young age, drawn to its physicality, vibrant colors, and the community of glass makers. I work primarily in hot blown glass with some work in ceramics, making functional ware for the home.  My work liberally uses bright colors to create bold, expressive, and playful visuals that bring attention to these objects when they are used.

Through my work I seek to create well-designed and beautiful objects that will bring life to the homes of their users. I focus on functional objects that highlight and exploit the material properties of glass and ceramics. My work stresses the relationship between the hand of the maker and the hand of the user. By leaving behind evidence of the making process, the user gains a greater connection and understanding of the work.

Craft allows me to explore my ideas while indulging my love of technical skill and making. The act of making is never boring, never tedious, never unfulfilling.
